All of our pieces are made with extremely purposeful
exactitude along with a thorough quality control process.
Below is a synopsis of our process of handcrafting
furniture that is striking, durable, and built to
last. We have utmost confidence in our workmanship
due to our painstaking scrutiny of each piece built,
regardless of what is being made.
The process begins with 24' long 11-gauge square
steel tubing that comes in both 1" and 1 ½" dimensions.
The tubing is delivered with a dark coating that is
a rust-inhibitor. When a piece is built, the tubing
is cut using a band saw. The cut pieces are subsequently
cleaned to remove the dark coating to prepare for
the next step in the process.
The cut pieces are then sanded using a grinder with
various sanding grits depending on the finish. The
results are pieces of tubing that change from the
original dark appearance to a shiny finish before
it is welded. This effortlessly prepares the tubing
for the final stage before delivery to the customer,
known as powder coating, which will be illustrated
later.
The steel tubes are then partially welded on our
3-D Demmeler welding table. This is the most vital
part of the process. This machined welding table,
made in Germany, is machined to very tight tolerances,
within 0.0004 of an inch per foot, to ensure stability
and flatness. The end result is perfectly flat and
true furniture. The piece is firmly clamped in using
attachments that allow for nearly perfect accuracy
so that you receive exactly what you have asked for.
Mercedes-Benzes and Porsches are constructed using
the exact same table, inevitably qualifying our workmanship.
After being partially welded on this table, the piece
is then removed and fully welded off the table. This
stage of the process produces a lava-like appearance
at each weld. The welds are than sanded smooth using
a disk grinder.
Once the piece is fully built and scrutinized to
ensure quality construction, it is placed in a "hotbox",
an insulated, heated enclosed area that eliminates
the risk of rust due to the high wattage light bulbs
that surround the interior of the hotbox. The piece
remains in the hotbox until is taken to be powder-coated.
Each piece is carefully handled and treated softly
so that you receive a unique piece of functional art
that is built to endure.
The final step in the process is the powder coating
stage. We take each piece to be powder coated. All
of our pieces are powder coated, a refined finishing
technique first used in Australia in 1967. Paint broken
down to a powder is applied, then heated (cured) to
its melting point, after which it flows to form a
smooth film which dries to a firm, durable finish,
which is very resistant to scratches, cracking, peeling,
UV rays and rust. The unique application characteristics
of powder coatings provide superior consistency and
uniformity of finish without sags, drips, runs, or
bubbles. This finish is also suitable for outdoor
furniture. Our standard colors are black, silver,
metallic silver, mirrored silver, clear and chrome.
Additional colors are available upon request.
Finally, the piece is ready to be delivered, dutifully
handcrafted in Kansas City, the heart of the Midwest.
The end result is beautiful, one-of-a-kind furniture
that cannot be found anywhere. PK Steel Designs LLC.
prides itself on our quality workmanship and original
designs, in addition to our custom design services.
